If you don't understand something, ask questions. That's what we're here for. If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut feelings. Remember that there is always more than one way to do something.
One of the best place for beginners to start is to read some BDSM/lifestyle educational books, such as those published in our recommended reading list: <link> - link to The Greenery Press and Cleis Press.
Most mid-sized or larger cites (and even some smaller ones) have munches or sloshes. These are casual, public social gatherings of kinky people, usually in restaurants or hotel bars. They are primarily a way for kinky people to meet each other and for friends to spend time together.
In addition to meeting new friends, munches and sloshes are ideal ways to find play parties or "dungeons" (regular BDSM play spaces) in your area. Most of this information is spread by word of mouth. The first few times you go to a play party or to a dungeon, you might feel more comfortable just watching and socializing. That's great. You can learn a lot from watching other people play. Also, it is important to learn proper etiquette and your local dungeon's rules.
